The Call of the Wild(JackLondon/Aladdin Paperbacks)
犬が主人公で、犬からの視点で語られるという、ちょっとファンタジックな物語。
フィクションということで、多少割り引いて考えるべきところはあるけれど、川で溺れそうな主人を助けたり、犬でありながら野生の狼を従えたり、色々と絵的にカッコいい場面が多い。
犬の中にもそれぞれ性格があって、主人公のBuckなどは、とても頭がいいので、読んでいてほとんど人間と同じように思えてくる。むしろ、登場する人間にタチの悪い輩が多いので、こりゃ人間より犬のほうががずっとマシだわ、という気にさえなる。
野生の中で、様々な経験を重ねるに従って、着実に、判断力と体力を身につけていくところは、読んでいてとても面白かった。この、闘いあり、成長あり、友情ありの、ジャンプ的黄金パターンの展開はやはり良い。
